Dr Chen obtained his medical degree (MB ChB) from the University of Auckland. He completed pathology specialist training across various public institutions in New Zealand and was awarded the Fellowship of Pathologists of Australasia in 2019. He then completed a two-year dermatopathology fellowship, and became one of the first recipients of the Post Fellowship Diploma in Dermatopathology, awarded by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Prior to joining QML, Dr Chen worked as a Consultant Dermatopathologist at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, where he was responsible for conducting regular teaching sessions for pathology and dermatology trainees, and dermatopathology fellows. 

Dr Chen is a member of the American Society of Dermatopathology and a member of the Australasian Dermatopathology Society, and is an Executive Committee Member of the Australasian Dermatopathology Society. He has presented at various local and international meetings. Dr Chen reports the entire spectrum of neoplastic and non-neoplastic Dermatopathology, including nail pathology and alopecia.
