- Graduated from Glasgow University, completing a science degree in microbiology before commencing his medical degree at Edinburgh University
- 1983 - Emigrated to Australia spending two years at Maryborough Base Hospital
- Commenced postgraduate training in Brisbane in clinical microbiology
- He has worked at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Mater Hospital
- 1992 - Joined QML Pathology as Consultant Medical Microbiologist supervising viral and bacterial investigations
- 2002 - Appointed Pathologist in Charge of Immunology and Microbiology
- Served as QML Pathology Medical Director from 2002 - 2005
- Special Interests: molecular pathology
