Cytology Pap Smear Audit

The QML Pathology Cytology Pap Smear Audit has been created for doctors and specialists who have an interest in women's health and refer cytology to QML Pathology.

QML Pathology will continue to support the Cytology Pap Smear Audit until the National Cervical Screening Program's "Renewal" comes into effect.

Audit Features

This clinical audit will enable doctors to conduct a systematic review of their clinical practice. Doctors will have the availability to assess their identification, detection, diagnostic accuracy, practical accuracy of smear collection and STI pick up rates in adjunctive testing, i.e., urine, swabs, BD SurePath™ and ThinPrep in regards to their female patient population.

All doctors statewide can assess their practice against their peers in a confidential setting via graphical and statistical information generated monthly. This information can then be used to further inform and improve clinical practice techniques, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of care for patients.
In addition, QML Pathology is offering assistance and feedback to GPs regarding their cytology both via statistical information and verbal communication with their QML Pathology Histo/Cytopathologists.

Doctors must use the dedicated lavender Cytology Pap Smear Audit Request Forms and tick the clinical boxes in order for the specimens to count toward the audit totals.

Request Forms

Doctors should utilise the lavender coloured specific Cytology Pap Smear Audit Request Forms for samples to be included in the audit.  These can be re-ordered using the QML Pathology Doctor Supply Requisition Form.

The audit will continue for the calendar year with a minimum requirement of 40 Pap smears completed. Data will be collected from all registered participants, and collated into a graphical report delivered monthly and at the finalisation of your audit.

Some features and data included are diagnostic findings and accuracy, procedural findings and causes of unsatisfactory accuracy, ancillary testing and detected STIs.

You will be sent a monthly report (for months during which you have submitted samples) which will include tabulated and graphical data.

Eligible general practitioners may attain the following after submitting 50 pap smears on the dedicated lavender Cytology Pap Smear Audit Request Forms:

  • RACGP QI&CPD: 40 Category 1 QI points
  • ACRRM: 30 PRPD points.
